When the enthusiasm for Muscle Cars came up in the late 1960er, there seemed to be a market that could be served with cheaper models. Plymouth responded with the 1968 Road Runner, which combined all the strengths of a Muscle Car, but did not have any of the fancy extras found in relatively expensive Performance Cars. The lack of frills helped keep the price of the Road Runner low was exactly what many buyers were looking for. The redesigned 1970 Road Runner was part of Plymouth's new rapid transit system family of high-performance vehicles. Among the whimsical new features were the optional Dust Trail sidewalks and a wild collection of eye-catching "High Impact" paint colors. The optional 440+6 engine worked with a trio of 2-barrel carburetors, providing 390 hp and a rich torque of 490 lb-ft. So equipped, a Road Runner was able to complete the quarter-mile in the mid-13-second range at over 102 mph.
