Series 212 is considered a direct V 100 chassis series and was built to meet their development requirements. Only a stronger 993 kW motor was used in the machine. In service as BR V 100.20 from 1962 to 1965, in contrast to the V 100.10 used in the branch service it was also intended for the main and steep-distance service.
Since an increased engine power compared to the V 100.10 proved to be functional, the front stem and the frame cover plate of the locomotives from V 100 2022 were extended from 12,100 mm to 12,300 mm. The larger cooling system can be seen by the vertical fins compared to the horizontal of the other series.
The locomotives were considered to be very robust and reliable, they achieved high, trouble-free running performance. The machines were used in almost the whole of Germany.
