The Raspberry Pi AI kit bundles the Raspberry Pi M.2 HAT+ with a Hailo AI acceleration module for use with the Raspberry Pi 5. It offers an accessible, cost-effective and energy-efficient way to integrate high-performance AI.
The AI module is an accelerator for neural networks with 13 Tera operations per second (TOPS) built around the Hailo 8L chip. The module uses form factor M.2 2242 and is pre-installed in M.2 HAT+, to which it is connected via an M-Key Edge connector. The M.2 HAT+ communicates between the M.2 interface of the AI module and the PCIe 2.0 interface of the Raspberry Pi 5.
If a current Raspberry Pi 5 is running a current Raspberry Pi OS image, the Hailo module is automatically detected and the NPU is made available for AI-computing tasks. The rpicam-apps built into the Raspberry Pi OS support the AI module from home and automatically use the NPU for compatible post-processing tasks.
