The E10 belongs to the family of standard locomotives and was built for the German Federal Railways in 1952. The four-axle machines were initially used in high-quality travel traffic before fast and D trains. For the locomotives of the Rheingold, a new windcut locomotive box was designed in 1962, which was also used in the series machines from E10 288. The kink on the front gave the locomotive its nickname "crease". The locomotives were previously operated as E10.3 with the German Federal Railways. From the 1990s, the range of applications of the locomotive, designated as series 110 from 1968, shifted in direction toward local traffic. Many machines were therefore equipped with turn-over control systems.
