The Technical Relief Agency had acquired the second, completely newly developed generation of the T2 from Mercedes-Benz from the very beginning, in order to have a replacement for the predecessor series, popular with the aid organizations between 1986 and 1996. Accordingly, the Mercedes-Benz transporter, which is suitable for everyday use, was used for a wide range of tasks.
