Blu-ray technology has led to the introduction of high-capacity discs to meet the growing demand triggered by the rapid growth of high-definition television (HDTV).

The name of Blu-ray discs derives from blue laser technology. The shorter laser wavelength leads to a blue light beam. While DVD media are read at 650 nm wavelength with the Red Laser technology, the blue laser has a wavelength of 405 nm. The advantage of a blue laser with a shorter wavelength is that smaller data pits can be written, thus increasing the amount of data on the disc.

Blu-ray discs offer three to five times more storage space than conventional recordable DVDs, allowing high-definition video (HD) to be recorded, played back and overwritten.
