Continuous measurement
Tensiometers are used for continuous measurement of soil moisture based on suction tension. The tensiometer measures the suction tension from 0 to approx. -600 mbar. The clay cell of the tensiometer transports water from the inside to the outside in a dry environment due to its capillarity, so that a vacuum is created in the closed tube. This negative pressure is a measure of humidity. The suction tension is the force with which the water is held or made available in the ground. The plant roots must produce this power to absorb water. Intensive substrate contact is a prerequisite for a rapid tensiometer reaction and for the measurement of typical values of certain soil and substrate types.
