LWL = TOSLINK is a standardized fiber optic connection system for optical signal transmissions in the range of up to about 20 Mbit/s. It has found widespread use in the digital transmission of audio signals in consumer goods, where it is used, for example, for transmission between components such as CD and DVD players and audio amplifiers. An optical fibre made of transparent plastic (PMMA or polycarbonate, POF for short) with a core diameter of 1 mm is used. The large diameter allows the radiation of light emitting diodes to be coupled with a focusing lens formed on them - no laser diodes are required. POFs have a smaller bending radius with the same diameter, but a higher attenuation than glass fiber optic cables, so the ranges are therefore limited to about 100 meters, practically to about 10 meters. The advantage of a fiber optic connection in audio technology is that it provides potential separation of the device components and thus avoids ground loops. LWL are also insensitive to electrical and magnetic interference couplings. In addition, interference radiation from cable-transmitted electrical digital signals is avoided.
