Lithium thionyl chloride batteries are available in many different sizes and designs, making them flexible. They are used in numerous applications and are characterized by their high energy density. This is higher than all other primary cells, making lithium thionyl chloride batteries particularly suitable for applications that have a low power consumption over a long period of time. In typical applications such as timers, lock cylinders, heating costs/hot water meters, toll systems, etc. lithium thionyl chloride batteries can be used for months and years without having to be replaced.The long life of lithium thionyl chloride batteries is not only visible in use but also in storage. Due to their extremely low self-discharge rate of just 1% per year, batteries of this technology can be stored for a longer period of time.The lithium thionyl chloride battery (LiSOCl2) is a non-rechargeable battery with lithium anode and a graphite electrode as cathode. The thionyl chloride is reduced in cathode and serves both as a solvent and as an electrolyte.At 3.6 volts, the cell voltage of lithium thionyl chloride batteries is significantly higher than the voltage level of other primary battery types. This voltage level is kept constant almost throughout the battery discharge time. But not only by this, LiSOCl2 cell chemistry stands out from the series of non-rechargeable cells. It is also superior to all other primary cells in energy density at up to 710 Wh/kg.Jauch lithium thionyl chloride cells are available in cylindrical sizes 1/2AA to D and can be used in a wide temperature range from -60°C to +85°C. Even at very low temperatures, the cells have good power and a constantly high voltage. The capacities of the cells range from 1.2 Ah to 19 Ah.Like all lithium batteries, lithium thionyl chloride cells and batteries are classified as hazardous materials. Special care is therefore required when storing and handling LiSOCl2 cells and batteries. When transporting by road, rail or air, high legal requirements must also be met.Naturally, Jauch lithium thionyl chloride batteries comply with all the necessary guidelines and comply with the legal framework conditions. They are also compliant with the European REACH directive and IEC60086-4 and certified according to UL1642.
