Description

Already in the 1920s, the Austrian Federal Railways (BBÖ) decided to electrify the most important routes as quickly as possible. Specially designed for the ramps in the mountains, the seven mountain-express train locomotives in series 1100 (in the case of ÖBB: Series 1089) were delivered to the BBÖ in 1923/24. The 20,350 mm long machines consisted of two short-coupled traction units, on which a short machine bridge with transformer, slide switch gear and two driver's cabs were stored in a hinged bearing. Due to their long, low and narrow front end hoods on the powerracks, the name “crocodile” quickly became the name, with these machines looking the “most crocodified” of all “crocodiles”. As they proved to be the best in 1926/27, nine replicas were delivered as in 1100.101-109 (ÖBB: 1189.01-09), which achieved a higher speed due to a changed transmission ratio and were equipped with stronger engines.
