Product description

Overview

Communicate directly with Bricks/Bricklet without Brickd
Supports 10/100 Mbps Ethernet (1000 Mbps compatible)
Integrated PoE power supply (PD Class 0 for IEEE 802.3af)
Possibility to power a stack via Ethernet cable

Description

With this Ethernet extension bricks and bricklets can be integrated into a LAN. 10BaseT/100BaseTX Ethernet is supported and the module is 1000BaseTX compatible. The extension is offered in two variants: The PoE version has an integrated PoE power supply, which enables the supply of the connected modules according to industry standard IEEE 802.3af, so that PoE injectors as well as PoE-capable switches can be supplied. Additionally a second variant without PoE is available.
As the extension itself can handle TCP/IP packets generated by the API, it is possible to control directly from the smartphone, tablet or (embedded) PC. The brick daemon is no longer necessary.
The Ethernet extension can be used together with a master brick or a RED brick. If other bricks are to be controlled, a stack can be built from them and plugged onto the master brick or RED brick. If bricklets are to be used, they can simply be connected to any brick in the stack (with the exception of the RED brick).
From the programmer's point of view, the use of an Ethernet extension is absolutely transparent, i.e. all bricks and bricklets can be used as if they were directly connected to the controlling device via USB.
The used master brick must have a firmware version of 2.1.0 or newer to use this extension.

Ethernet configuration
The Ethernet extension can be configured in two modes: DHCP or static IP. Only in static IP mode IP, Subnet Mask and Gateway must be entered.
The MAC address of the Ethernet Extension is not fixed and is assigned. If this is lost for any reason, it can be found on the sticker on the Ethernet extension.
After completing the configuration, the button "Save Ethernet Configuration" should be clicked and the master brick restarted.

WebSockets
The Ethernet extension supports WebSockets since Master Brick Firmware Version 2.2.0. The "Max Connections" setting allows the seven sockets of the Ethernet extension to be split as desired between normal and WebSocket connections.
WebSockets are used by the browser version of the JavaScript bindings to control bricks and bricklets.

Authentication
The Ethernet extension supports authentication since Master Brick Firmware Version 2.2.0. This is deactivated by default. To activate authentication, the checkbox "Use Authentication" must be checked and an authentication secret must be entered. The secret can be a maximum of 64 ASCII characters long. After the configuration has been saved and the master brick restarted, authentication is active.
Now any TCP/IP connection to the Ethernet extension must first prove that it knows the authentication secret before normal communication can take place.

PoE Power supply
To supply a stack of bricks and bricklets via PoE a PoE injector can be used. The Ethernet extension then supplies the complete stack. Active PoE is indicated by the green LED on the extension.
Servos and (stepper) motors connected to DC, servo or stepper bricks cannot be supplied via PoE, as the PoE voltage would be too high for this.
The Ethernet extension can be operated together with a step-down power supply.
