For the transport of passenger and goods wagons in railway stations, the German Federal Railways set smaller locomotives already early on. A further development of the Köf in 11, with power transmission via cardan shafts and additional axle transmission, was presented by Gmeinder in 1965. From this model, initially designated as Köf 12, 251 shunting locomotives were delivered as series 333 to the German Federal Railways. In order to save personnel, a large part of the locomotives were equipped with a radio remote control from the end of the 1980s. These locomotives were referred to as series 335. In the course of time, the locomotives have weathered several color variations, from 1986 onwards Orient red became the standard color.
