New 2025: At the beginning of the seventies there was a great demand for electric locomotives for maximum speeds of up to 160 km/h, which were to fulfill the power program of the 110 series and replace old-built electric locomotives. Between 1974 and 1984, 227 locomotives were manufactured by the companies Krauss-Maffei, Henschel, Krupp, Siemens, AEG and BBC. The locomotives were initially given scissors pantographs, which were largely replaced by single-arm pantographs. The machines intended for use on the S-Bahn on the Rhine and Ruhr area were painted in light gray with orange belly binding and train destination signs from the factory.
